About Vena

I began my academic studies in the field of child development. Courses in the early childhood education program initiated my lifelong interest in learning theory and the construction of excellent environments for learning. These studies led me to the field of psychology and eventually to the development of my counseling practice.

My clinical skills were developed through formal education, interactions with clients, and years of clinical supervision. I have had the great privilege of studying with dozens of highly-skilled therapists and many of the world's best-known sex therapists. These master clinicians imparted wisdom and insight, as well as scientific information and research skills. I completed my Doctorate in Human Sexuality, at the Institute for the Advance Study of Human Sexuality in 2006.

I am a professional member of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS); certified in both Sex Education and Clinical Sexology, and have been repeatedly elected to office in all of my professional organizations. I am currently on the Board of Directors of SSSS, and President of the International Professional Surrogates Association.

Speaker and Sex Educator

In addition to my private practice, I enjoy teaching undergraduate and graduate students about human sexuality and sex therapy at universities and colleges throughout Southern California (including UCLA, UCSD, San Diego State, University of Phoenix, etc.). I am honored to repeatedly receive invitations to conduct educational seminars, workshops, and participate in symposia for my professional colleagues.

Interviews, documentaries, and other media experiences
I have been interviewed, consulted, and filmed dozens of times in conjunction with different news, magazine, television, and online programs, as well as dozens of documentary and feature films. Recently, I have participated in pieces for ABC News, Newsweek's The Daily Beast, The Washington Post, Dan Savage's Savage Love, and more. A list of media projects is available upon request.
